In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Nucor CEO Leon Topalian gave reassurances that the steelmaker is on the right track despite quarterly earnings that fell short of expectations and weak guidance for the current period. Nucor released its quarterly report Monday evening and by Tuesday's close, shares had declined more than 8%. The company said it expects its steel products segment to have "moderately decreased earnings" in the second quarter compared to the first due to "lower average selling prices, partially offset by increased volumes." Topalian conceded that the second quarter would be "a little bit lower," but insisted that steel products has been "one of our strongest, most resilient, robust performers." And according to him, Nucor is seeing its earnings moderate after the past few years of intense growth following the pandemic.

Apple has reversed course under regulatory pressure and cleared the way for a nettlesome adversary, video game maker Epic Games, to set up an alternative store for iPhone apps in Europe. Apple attributed the change of heart to reassurances from Epic that it won't violate its requirements for getting access to iPhone owners. Epic had brazenly broke the rules in the U.S. in 2020 to trigger an antitrust lawsuit alleging Apple's App Store is a monopoly. Apple had rejected Epic's attempt to set up an account that would have allowed it to set up an alternative store for downloading iPhone apps — something that Apple has held exclusive control over for more than 15 years. When President Xi Jinping of China made his first state visit to the United States in 2015, he wrapped his demands for respect in reassurances. He denied that China was militarizing the disputed South China Sea, while asserting its maritime claims there.
